Aurora Innovation Saves Time for Both Healthcare Providers and Patients

“Would you like to be contacted by healthcare as soon as an appointment is available?” If you’ve heard this or a similar message when calling a healthcare provider, you may have benefited from Aurora Innovation’s services without even realizing it. Reaching 70% of the country’s patients, Aurora Innovation’s booking and callback services enhance healthcare accessibility across Sweden.

“We’re not only saving time for those seeking care. We’re also helping healthcare providers reduce stress and streamline their operations, which increases overall access to healthcare—a key driver for us,” says Lisa Öhberg, Marketing and Communications Manager at Aurora.

Aurora’s story traces back to the 1950s, when its founder, Carl Leijonhufvud, began assisting patients with simple tasks while they waited to see a doctor. Today, Aurora Innovation’s operations are far more sophisticated and extensive, but the company continues to hold the same values.

“We facilitate communication and planning so that life becomes a little easier for both patients and healthcare staff,” says Lisa.

Aurora Innovation was established in 2005, with its operations initially centered around the scheduling and planning system, Aurora teleQ. Today, teleQ is often integrated with electronic health records, enabling nurses to easily access patient information. When the nurse calls back, the patient avoids long wait times, and the nurse can address the case with less stress and greater familiarity.

“In addition to improving call quality, we compile data that helps healthcare providers with planning and staffing. We also create efficient structures for non-telephone communication, such as online chats and other digital inquiries,” Lisa adds. Originally designed for phone calls, teleQ is now a comprehensive communication platform for nearly all patient interactions.

The Uppsala-based company now generates approximately SEK 160 million in revenue and employs around 100 people. In addition to Sweden, Aurora operates in Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal.

“Through Swedish Scaleups, we gain valuable partners who ask the right questions and advise us on what to focus on for sustainable growth,” says Lisa.

The company has grown significantly in Sweden and is now looking to expand internationally, though healthcare systems vary widely across countries. “We need insights to understand where our system is most likely to succeed,” Lisa explains. “In a few years, I hope we’ll be established in two new markets and may have broadened our product portfolio.”
